Carlos Beltran’s glove comes back from the dead

Carlos Beltran’s glove has been resurrected after mock funeral, giving us all a reason to believe in good things.

Magic at Minute Maid Park. Just one day after laying his glove to rest, Carlos Beltran will start in the outfield for the Houston Astros. The Astros held a mock funeral for the veteran’s glove, as Beltran hadn’t started in the field since May 16.

However, he will start in left field Wednesday against the Mariners.

Beltran has appeared in 79 games for the Astros this season, only playing the outfield nine times. Wednesday will be his tenth game in the field. Manager A.J. Hinch has kept the 40-year-old at DH for most of the season in order to give Marwin Gonzalez regular starting time. Gonzalez, who is hitting .311 with 17 homers, will start at shortstop on Wednesday. Gonzalez will likely be playing shortstop for a number of weeks, replacing Carlos Correa, who will miss 6-8 weeks following thumb surgery.

Could this mean more time in the field for Beltran? Certainly. However, he is 40 after all. The Astros have an array of outfield talent. George Springer, Josh Reddick, Nori Aoki and Jake Marisnick have all seen play time in the outfield this season.

In wake of the injury to Correa, the Astros recalled third baseman Colin Moran. Moran may get to see the field occasionally as third baseman Alex Bregman would play shortstop, his natural position. In that case, Gonzalez would move back to the outfield and Beltran would play DH once again. The team has not announced any additional moves, but top prospect Derek Fisher could also make a return to the majors within the coming weeks.

Hinch loves to tinker with his lineup, as he has all season. Correa’s injury provides Hinch with many alternatives as his team’s depth is seemingly endless. However, let’s just focus on today. Carlos Beltran is back in the outfield.
