As the Red Sox frantically search for a third baseman, they may’ve found their guy in Eduardo Nunez.

According to Bob Nightengale, the Boston Red Sox are keeping an eye on Giants third baseman Eduardo Nunez. The Red Sox seemed set on a move for the former White Sox third baseman Todd Frazier before the Yankees traded for Frazier Tuesday night.

Boston’s frantic search for a glove in the hot corner continues after designating Pablo Sandoval for assignment. For this reason, the Sox monitoring Nunez’s situation in the Bay area. The 30-year-old is not getting any younger and the Giants are not getting any better. San Francisco sits 29.5 games back of the Dodgers in baseball’s best division, it’s looking like time to start considering selling.

The Giants have made Nunez available and the Red Sox are very interested. Although Boston sit atop the AL East, it feels as if it needs to buy before the deadline to remain in first place. Especially since the Yankees and Rays are within a few games of the division lead. Nunez, a seasoned veteran, would provide a solid glove and consistent bat to the lineup.

The 2016 All-star is hitting .293 this season with just 27 strikeouts. No doubt that Nunez would be a major upgrade over current third baseman, Brock Holt, who is hitting just .179 thus far. Given, Holt is just a placeholder while Boston finds a long-term solution.

The price Boston would have to pay for Nunez could be costly. Considering the Giants traded for him just over a year ago, they might need to be persuaded to let him leave. However, the Red Sox need to move swiftly if they’re serious about contending for a World Series this year. Nunez would elevate Boston above its division and throw it into the mix with the Astros and Dodgers.
