MLB Trade rumors: Colorado Rockies acquire Pat Neshek

The Colorado Rockies look to bolster their bullpen before the trade deadline and have added a key piece in RHP Pat Neshek from the Philadelphia Phillies.

The Colorado Rockies are in a bind heading into the trade deadline. They’re currently sitting at 58-44, which is still 12.5 games back of the first-place Dodgers in the NL West. From a wild card standpoint, they’re in the second wild card spot with good headway on the quick rising Chicago Cubs.

One of the key weaknesses for the Rockies happens to be their bullpen. Their starters haven’t been going as deep into the games and hence have to use their relievers often in games. As a result, it’s a group that’s underwhelmed and worn out with 60 games remaining in the season.

As the Rockies try to make the MLB Playoffs for the first time in forever, they’re making moves trying to strengthen their bullpen. Per Ken Rosenthal, the Rockies are acquiring right-handed pitcher Pat Neshek from the Philadelphia Phillies.

As Rosenthal notes, in exchange for Neshek, the Rockies will be sending three minor league players to Philadelphia. It will be IF Jose Gomez, RHP J.D. Hammer and RHP Alejandro Requena.

For a team like Colorado who’s desperate to add help to their bullpen, sending future prospects isn’t as big a deal right now.

Neshek, 36, is 3-2 this season, with a 1.12 ERA. He’s made 43 appearances and pitched in 40.1 innings with the Phillies. He continues to be a dominant force out of the bullpen for managers.

In his career, Neshek has moved around quite a bit, pitching for the Twins, Padres, Athletics, Cardinals, Astros before landing in Philadelphia. He was probably best known for his time in St. Louis, where he was a key part of the bullpen. Hopefully this addition for Colorado will prove to be a missing piece in their postseason run.
