Every MLB team’s Mount Rushmore
Arizona Diamondbacks
The Arizona Diamondbacks are a relative young franchise, joining the MLB in 1998. But despite their short history, their Mount Rushmore is surprisingly strong and might be in the upper half of all the MLB teams.
Luis Gonzalez gets the nod for the first spot. Not only did he put up outstanding numbers in Arizona, he got the game winning hit of the 2001 World Series. Gonzalez’s single off Mariano Rivera in Game 7 remains the most iconic moment in franchise history. He will later be passed by someone else on this monument, but as of July 2017, he’s the franchise leader in home runs and hits, RBIs and runs scored.
Paul Goldschmidt is arguably the best position player in franchise history. He either has already passed or is darn close to passing Gonzalez’s franchise leading totals. By the time Goldschmidt’s time in Arizona is done, he’ll be unquestionably the best position player in franchise history. He’s already the franchise leader among position players in bWAR.
Randy Johnson barely reaches the eight-year suggestion, but he would have been granted an exception. He’s the franchise leader among pitchers in bWAR, innings pitched, wins, strikeouts, shutouts and complete games. Johnson was instrumental during the 2001 World Series run as well.
Curt Schilling only pitched for the Diamondbacks for four seasons, but he gets an exception. First of all, Arizona simply doesn’t win the 2001 World Series without both The Big Unit and Schilling. Secondly, despite his short time with the Diamondbacks, he ranks highly in most pitching categories.
This Curt Schilling figurine will look great on your desk.
Honorable mentions: The final spot came down to Schilling and Brandon Webb. Webb was extremely good during his prime but had serious injuries he just couldn’t bounce back from. He ranks just below Johnson in most pitching categories.
