It may be preseason, but Geoffrey Kondogbia of Inter Milan might have already scored the own goal of the year against Chelsea.

Unless you’re a die-hard fan of Chelsea or Inter Milan, you probably missed their head-to-head clash. As part of the International Champions Cup, they played in Singapore, which means you would’ve had to wake up anywhere between 4-7 a.m. to watch a preseason match if you live in North America. And while they’re two big teams, that match doesn’t have the same appeal as Barcelona vs. Real Madrid, who will square off in primetime down in Miami.

There are plenty of reasons why the ICC should be scrapped altogether, but in this case, it provided us with one of the most noteworthy misplays of the year. With his team already up 2-0, Geoffrey Kondogbia decided to pass it back to his goalkeeper from midfield. Why he did that instead of just pass the forward up is anybody’s guess. However, his back-pass resulted in one of the most spectacular own goals you’re ever going to see:

The way the goalkeeper looked back at him was priceless, while the Chelsea fans, who had little to cheer about up until that point, started going crazy. Even when the season starts, people likely won’t let Kondogbia off the hook for that.

Goals scored from midfield are rare enough as it is these days. The most recent example may be Charlie Adam’s blinder, which coincidentally also came against Chelsea. Kondogbia’s goal is no less of a spectacular achievement, especially given he’s only scored two goals in an Inter shirt up to this point. It just sucks for him that it came at the wrong end.

Luckily for Kondogbia, that didn’t change the outcome of the game — Inter went on to win 2-1. The focus for him now is to try and string together enough plays during the Serie A season that will make everyone forget about this mishap.
