Fantasy Baseball: Will Howie Kendrick See Enough At Bats With The Nats?

The Washington Nationals made a trade to help their depth by acquiring Howie Kendrick from the Phillies. Kendrick has played the outfield exclusively this season, but he has played second base and first base as well in his career. Will he get enough at bats with Washington to be fantasy relevant? Here is what Washington had to give up:

Nationals Get
2B/OF Howie Kendrick
Phillies Get
LHP McKenzie Mills, Future Considerations

Kendrick is hitting .340 with two homers and 16 RBI in 39 games for the Phillies this year. The Phillies were phasing him out for promising youngsters despite his superb numbers on the season.

Kendrick was a huge boost to deep league teams earlier this season when he was starting 4-5 games per week. With Nick Williams called up and Aaron Altherr back from injury, he became expendable to the Phillies.

The Nationals were looking for someone in the outfield due to injuries to Ryan Raburn, Jayson Werth, and Chris Heisey. Kendrick himself has been on the disabled list with hamstring and oblique injuries this year, and is currently nursing a bruised hand after being hit by a pitch earlier this week.

Due to all of the injuries for Washington, Kendrick will see plenty of at bats in the short term. Due to semi-regular playing time, Kendrick can help owners in leagues of 12 or more teams. If you play on a big rostered ten team league, he can even help you there!

Mills is 12-2 with a 3.01 ERA in 18 starts for High A Hagerstown. He is likely still a couple of years away from the majors, but the development of his changeup has him rising up prospect lists. Right now, he is 24th in the Phillies system, which is pretty loaded.
