Seahawks to sign Kam Chancellor to extension

The Seattle Seahawks will be keeping a key component of their defense. According to reports, they are resigning safety Kam Chancellor to a three-year extension.

The Seattle Seahawks are doing their best to keep their defense and the Legion of Boom together as best as possible this upcoming season.

According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, the Seahawks are signing safety Kam Chancellor a three-year extension worth $36 million. Chancellor was set to become an unrestricted free agent next offseason, but is now under contract through 2020.

The extension comes two years after Chancellor requested a new contract before the 2015 season. The two sides could not reach any kind of agreement during that time. Chancellor then chose to skip the beginning of the season and returned after the Seahawks started 0-2. This time time, there will be no holdout.

The fifth-round pick has proved to be well worth the money since he came into the league in 2010. He’s totaled 401 tackles and 12 interceptions during his seven years with the team. He’s also been a factor on the special teams unit as well. Known for his outspoken nature, Chancellor has also been one of the unheralded leaders of this team. Paired with safety Earl Thomas in the secondary, the two have regarded as the best safety duo in NFL in recent years.

A Seahawks secondary that’s been known for their dominance in recent years but struggled last season. It carried over into the later part of the season and proved their ultimate downfall in the playoffs. They were torched by Matt Ryan during the NFC Divisional Playoff round and gave up 338 yards and three touchdowns.

Now with Chancellor back, the secondary is able to stay in tact. The Seahawks now have Chancellor, Thomas and Richard Sherman under team control for at least the next two seasons. That is great news for a team looking to get back to the playoffs and compete for a Super Bowl once again this season.
