The College Football Playoff is a three-game format, with the winners of the semifinals matching up in the College Football National Championship Game.
The College Football Playoff is the most exciting time of year during the college football season, as the top four teams in the country battle it out for supremacy. The college football landscape has been dominated by the Clemson Tigers and Alabama Crimson Tide the last two seasons, as they have met in the College Football National Championship Game in each of the last two years.
The programs split the first two games of the rivalry, though a third matchup seems unlikely this season.
In last year’s game, the Tigers upset the Crimson Tide, who came into the game with one of the better defenses in college football history. Quarterback Deshaun Watson hit Hunter Renfrow for the game-winning touchdown late in the fourth quarter, capping off a stunning comeback victory. Watson has since gone to the NFL, and Alabama lost a ton of stars on the defensive side of the ball, though both teams should be in the mix for a spot in the CFP this season.
Prior to the title game, the four teams have to play in semifinal matchups, and this year the games will be the Rose Bowl, and the Allstate Sugar Bowl. These two semifinal matchups will take place on New Years Day, and both bring such tradition to the playoffs. The Rose Bowl is called “The Granddaddy of Them All,” as it is the oldest bowl game, and the Sugar Bowl is one of three bowls who are only one year younger than the Rose Bowl.
The College Football National Championship Game will take place inside the Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta, Georgia on January 8, 2018. All of college football will be hoping to be one of the two teams to battle it out in the game, and the hope for all fans is that it will be as entertaining as the title game was last season.
Will Alabama make it to another title game? Only time will tell.
