Salvador Perez injury update: Royals’ catcher goes on DL
The last thing the Kansas City Royals needed as they try to push for the playoffs is an injury. But now, catcher Salvador Perez has been placed on the DL.
The Kansas City Royals are trying to get back to the World Series after having a run of success a few years ago. The core of that team still exists, but they just haven’t been able to put the pieces together. The last thing they needed was one of their best players going on the disabled list.
The Royals placed Salvador Perez on the 10-day disabled list on Sunday after he sustained an injury. The strain that’s keeping the Royals’ catcher away from the field is an intercostal strain. Perez had an MRI done on Friday night that revealed the strain, but it was far better than many around the organization had feared.
According to Royals’ manager Ned Yost, the maximum time that Perez will spend on the disabled list will be four weeks. As a result, Kansas City had to call up a catcher, which happened to be Cam Gallagher from Class AAA Omaha.
It’ll be an important stretch of baseball for the Royals, who currently sit at second place in the AL Central division. With a record of 56-52, Kansas City is chasing the first-place Cleveland Indians, who are three games ahead of their rival from Missouri.

So far this season, Perez has been invaluable to the Royals, batting .278, with 21 home runs and 65 RBI. His experience behind the plate is just as important with pitchers, as he’s been doing for six seasons now.
Kansas City will try to go the next four weeks without their starting catcher, who its the disabled list with a strained intercostal muscle. The Royals will try to leapfrog the Indians with a little under 60 games left in the season.
