When asked about whether or not he would be open to fighting Conor McGregor, Canelo Alvarez didn’t completely shoot the idea down.

On Sep. 16, one of the biggest fights in the history of boxing’s middleweight division will be taking place as Canelo Alvarez will face off with Gennady “GGG” Golovkin to determine who the best in the division really is. These two power punchers are ready to give boxing fans a show that they have been waiting a long time for.

Speaking of shows, when the subject of boxing is brought up these days, it’s quite difficult to ignore the spectacle that is Conor McGregor vs. Floyd Mayweather. That mega fight will be taking place just a few weeks earlier on Aug. 26, although pure boxing fans know that the Canelo-GGG showdown is the fight they’re really waiting for.

When it comes to Mayweather vs. McGregor, though, there is the possibility that the UFC star steps into the boxing ring and shocks the world. It’s a very, very small chance, but when it comes to combat sports, you never really know.

So if the Irish power puncher were to be the man to take down Floyd Mayweather for the first time in his professional career, would Canelo be open to being McGregor’s second professional opponent, should he handle his own business against GGG on Sep. 16?

“If that miracle was to happen, then we have a conversation,” Alvarez told FanSided on Tuesday during an international media call. “If that miracle were to happen, but I doubt it very much that Conor beats Floyd.”

Naturally, Canelo is on the side of everyone else in the boxing world in thinking that McGregor has no chance whatsoever to come away with the win. But now it’s at least fun to think about that should Conor come away victorious, then there’s even the smallest chance we could have another mega fight on our hands.

Let’s not also forget that these two do have somewhat of a history with one another. It was just last year that Conor took some of his usual verbal jabs at Canelo, and Alvarez fired back by inviting him to the boxing ring at any time.

The chances of this taking place at all are slim to none right now, but hey, we’re about to watch Mayweather and McGregor in a boxing ring, so you truly never know.
