Famed and controversial director Spike Lee announced via Twitter a rally for Colin Kaepernick outside the NFL offices in New York City.

Spike Lee, best known for his work in film and TV, is also an avid sports fan. Lee has also never shied away from commenting on acts that he feels are an injustice. On Tuesday, it was announced that Lee, in conjunction with organizations that speak for justice, will be holding a rally for former NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick.

Kaepernick’s story is well known by now. He was one of the players that knelt for the national anthem at the start of every game. Kaepernick also became very outspoken in his reasoning behind the protest and how he felt the flag.

The quarterback’s name has been popping up throughout the offseason. Several reports linked him to various starting and backup jobs in the NFL. Most recently, Kaepernick’s name was being discussed by the Baltimore Ravens following the Joe Flacco injury and the Miami Dolphins after Ryan Tannehill went down in practice.

Kaepernick played last season for the San Francisco 49ers. This is the team that drafted him and where he had success that included a run to the Super Bowl.

He started in 11 games for the team with a 1-10 record. The highlight of his season was the phenomenal 16 touchdowns to four interceptions. Kaepernick added two more touchdowns via his legs where he totaled almost 500 yards. However a completion percentage of 59 percent and QBR of 55 positioned him as one of the lower-ranked quareterback in the league.

The protest is scheduled for Wednesday, August 23 at 5:00 p.m. It will be held outside the NFL headquarters on Park Avenue in New York City. This will be the second of it’s kind. A Kaepernick rally was also held in May of this past year outside the league office.

There are a lot of teams who could use the service of a former starting quarterback and injuries are bound to happen. It is hard to see how the protest will drive a team in the NFL to sign the quarterback.
