PGA Championship 2017: What is the prize money?
How much money does the winner of the 2017 PGA Championship bring home? A look at the prize money for golf’s fourth major championship.
It’s no secret that being one of the best golfers on the PGA Tour can be a lucrative venture. For most tournaments that aren’t even majors, the winner can clear seven figures in their payday. However, when it comes to a major championship, you’re talking about a much bigger amount of prize money. And one of the most profitable of the bunch is the PGA Championship.
The 2017 PGA Championship has even increased the purse for the fourth major of the year. There will be $10.5 million paid out to the competitors at Quail Hollow in Charlotte, NC. For comparison’s sake, the last major — the British Open — had a purse $250,000 less than that. What that means is there’s a lot of money to be had.
Regardless of money, though, there is obviously prestige on the line. As the fourth major championship of the PGA Tour season, that means a lot. It especially means a great deal to guys like Jordan Spieth. After capturing The Open Championship, Spieth needs only the PGA to win the career grand slam.
At the same time, all of the other big names in golf will be on display as well. Rory McIlroy is considered a favorite, but guys like Dustin Johnson, Jon Rahm, Jason Day, Rickie Fowler and so on will all be at Quail Hollow. All would also love to capture the title at the tournament.
But in the end, they play this game to win money. So then, what does the prize money look like for the 2017 PGA Championship?
The winner of the 2017 PGA Championship will receive $1.89 million, while the runner-up will clear $1 million as well. For reference for the rest of the placements, the top 70 will get paid. All golfers in the top 22 will clear six figures while 70th place will receive $18,900.
