Nothing gets anyone pumped up for a round of golf quite like Ric Flair, right? TNT’s intro to the PGA Championship featured the Nature Boy.

The PGA Championship, one of golf’s biggest tournaments, is taking place at Quail Hollow Country Clube in Charlotte, N.C. this week. The first round is well under way with favorites like Jordan Spieth, Rory McIlroy and Dustin Johnson all vying for “glory’s last shot” in the final major of the year.

The youngsters have given golf a new attitude for sure and given the sport a bright future in the post-Tiger Woods world.

Still, golf could use a little bit more hype. It still has a stodgy, upper-class feel about the sport. That may never go away.

But as TNT and the PGA of America promotes the tournament and its coverage this week, they turned to one of Charlotte’s favorite athletes. And someone who knows a bit about cutting a promo himself.

At the top of the 5 p.m. ET broadcast, as Jim Nantz took over coverage of the tournament, Ric Flair greeted viewers to prep them for the major tournament ahead.

To be the man, you got to beat the man. And Ric Flair IS the man.

Sure, Ric Flair is right. To be the man, you have to have a certain swagger and way of carrying yourself. And more than golfers of any generation, this young generation of golfers are definitely more modern and flamboyant than ever. Just look at what Rickie Fowler is likely to wear Sunday (read: bright orange).

Still, Flair asking players to do away with their humility and decorum is not exactly what anyone thinks of when it comes to golf. Even at the highest levels.

Generally, Ric Flair and the hype machine of wrestling is not what anyone thinks of when it comes to golf and PGA. In fact, people probably think of the opposite.

But if anyone can make golf a little more like wrestling, it has to be Ric Flair.
