The first Saturday of the Premier League season was full of surprises, so it’s only fitting Huddersfield top the league.

The Premier League returned in style Friday night as Arsenal beat Leicester 4-3 at the Emirates Stadium, coming back twice to win it with five minutes remaining. That result put the Gunners top of the league until the Saturday slate of games, which saw Liverpool, Chelsea, Everton and Manchester City in action.

Liverpool and Chelsea both stumbled. The Reds, after coming from behind twice, conceded an injury-time equalizer to draw 3-3 away to Watford, while nine-man Chelsea lost 3-2 to Burnley in a match they trailed 3-0 at halftime.

Things went more smoothly for title favorites Manchester City. Pep Guardiola’s side struggled to break Brighton down in the first half but ultimately cruised to a 2-0 win thanks to goals from Sergio Aguero and Lewis Dunk, who turned into his own net.

Everton also had a good day, winning 1-0 at home against Stoke thanks to Wayne Rooney, making his first appearance for the club since he left for Manchester United over a decade ago. The win leaves the Toffees fifth.

But the big winners of the day were newly-promoted Huddersfield, who played Crystal Palace in their first ever Premier League match. David Wagner’s side weren’t as dominant as the scoreline suggested, but for a club most expect to get relegated at the end of the season, a day at the top of the table should be cherished.

In the day’s other matches, Southampton drew with Swansea 0-0 despite dominating most of the contest, while West Brom beat Bournemouth thanks to another set piece goal.

Newcastle face Tottenham at St. James’ Park in the early match on Sunday, before Manchester United kick off their season against West Ham. It will take a big win for one of those sides to unseat Huddersfield at the top of the league.
