Duke lands 5-star prospects Marvin Bagley III and Tre Jones and more from the world of recruiting

Each week we look to compile all of the biggest news from the world of college basketball recruiting. While the commitments of Marvin Bagley III and Tre Jones to Duke top the list, plenty of other big events took place. Here’s a look at the most important stories of the week.

Marvin Bagley commits to Duke, will attempt to re-classify

On Monday night, after plenty of baseball highlights, the nation’s top high school basketball player announced his commitment to the Blue Devils and his plans to re-classify into the Class of 2017 on the 11:00 p.m. ET edition of Sportscenter. Bagley still has to be cleared by the NCAA, but if he is eligible to play this season, Duke will be one of the favorites to win the national title. At worst, the 6-foot-11 big man has set himself up to enter the 2018 NBA Draft where he could go No. 1 overall.

Tre Jones commits to Duke

Before Bagley was… in the bag, the Blue Devils had already landed one 5-star prospect. On Sunday, Jones, brother to 2015 national champion Tyus Jones, committed to the school. He will presumably be the team’s top point guard for the 2018-19 season as he looks to follow in his brother’s footsteps.

Mitchell Robinson visits the University of New Orleans

The bizarre recruitment of the 7-footer took another turn this week as he visited the University of New Orleans. Last weekend, Robinson was at Kansas. At this point, it appears to be an unlikely battle between the two schools for a player who still need to get a waiver from the NCAA to play this season. Remember, the general presumption at this point is that Robinson won’t be eligible for the 2017-18 season because he enrolled at and practiced with Western Kentucky earlier this summer.

R.J. Barrett releases his top five schools

Now widely considered to be the No. 1 prospect in the Class of 2018, Barrett narrowed his list to Arizona, Duke, Kentucky, Michigan and Oregon, he announced via Twitter. His father told Scout that no official visits have been set up yet. The 6-foot-6 wing had an excellent all-around summer, but his crowning moment came in the semifinals of the FIBA U19 World Cup when he put up 38 points, 13 rebounds and five assists in Team Canada’s upset of Team USA.

Zion Griffin cuts his list to four

If you haven’t heard of Zion Griffin, you’re forgiven, but he’s worth mentioning because of how crazy his story is. The 6-foot-6 wing actually plays center for his high school team and wasn’t on the recruiting radar, but earlier this summer he blew up with a couple of performances at the Hardwood Classic in Lawrence, KS. Griffin entered the event with just one scholarship offer, to St. Cloud State in Division II. Now, the 4-star prospect has a list of Illinois State, Iowa State, Kansas and Pittsburgh. He’s already set dates for his official visits and is targeting a decision this fall.
