Big time boxing comes to Nebraska as one of its favorite sons attempts to be the undisputed champion of the world at 140 pounds.

Terence “Bud” Crawford might be the best boxer in the world that the general public doesn’t know. The undefeated Omaha native entered his fight on Saturday night with the opportunity to do something rare: unify all of the belts that matter in the 140-pound division.

Standing in his way was Julius Indongo, a 34-year old who earned his two title belts the hard way, traveling from Namibia to Scotland for his two championship opportunities. His power and southpaw style figured to be at least slight issues for Crawford, though the ESPN announce team felt Crawford had more weapons in his arsenal.

The tale of the tape showed something unusual, as Crawford is three inches taller but has a reach advantage of more than two inches. Bud also had a tough time making weight, adding to speculation that this might be his last fight at junior welterweight.

Indongo comes out first, hearing the boos from the partisan Nebraska crowd. Also undefeated at 22-0, he cracks a smile as he walks to the ring.

Crawford comes out second, soaking in the atmosphere of his 10th world title fight. He actually comes down from the concourse through the fans. Crawford has won 22 of his 31 pro fights by KO. He’s sporting a Nebraska Cornhuskers football jersey with the number 140 on it, which is pretty cool.

Jack Reiss is the man in charge of the action. The introductions are made, and we’re underway for the undisputed junior welterweight championship of the world.

Terence Crawford vs. Julius Indongo round by round results

Round 1

Indongo reaches but can’t get to Crawford with jabs. The “Crawford” chants are ringing out as he lands a counter left. Indongo goes to the body and has to duck return fire. Indongo tries to counter but Crawford lands a hook to the body. Bud’s foot speed gets him out of the way along the ropes, and we get our first clinch. Both men bounce around and land light shots.

Round 2

Indongo seems to want to lunge in, which might not be a good idea. Crawford is able to stay away from most of his jabs and wait for his opening. Lots of feinting without many punches being thrown. Indongo lands a sweeping left but gets forced back right after that. An exchange breaks out and Indongo is down. Andre Ward thinks he might have gotten up too quickly after that, and Indongo charges in and clinches. Wild swings both ways, and Crawford has a wild miss with a right hook. Replays show it was a right to the body followed by a left behind the ear that scored the knockdown.

Round 3

Crawford has fought exclusively southpaw so far, and it’s working out just fine. He’s taking his time and stalking, letting Indongo commit first. Bud lands a right to the gut and moves away. A two-punch counterpunch combo scores for Crawford, and Indongo goes down in a heap. Reiss counts to 10, and that’s all she wrote. Easy work for Bud, as it turns out.

The winner by KO at 1:38 of Round 3 … still WBC, WBO, The Ring and now WBA and IBF junior welterweight champion of the world … Terence “Bud” Crawford.

The replays show that Indongo swung wide, as he had the whole fight, leaving himself wide open to the body. Crawford landed a left and a right to the stomach about as flush as it’s possible to do.
