NFL roundup: Anquan Boldin retires after 14 seasons

After 14 NFL season, star wide receiver Anquan Boldin decided to call it a career on Sunday as a member of the Buffalo Bills.

For 14 NFL seasons, Anquan Boldin was one of the more productive wide receivers in the league. On Sunday, Boldin decided to end that career, just weeks after signing with the Buffalo Bills for the 2017 NFL season. Boldin was expected to play a large role with the Bills, as they traded away Sammy Watkins last week, and they will now have to figure out another plan for the passing game.

Jaylon Smith was not even supposed to play football again after a devastating knee injury at the University of Notre Dame. However, Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones took a flier on him come draft day, and it may actually end up paying dividends. Smith played two series for the Cowboys this past weekend and looked great, so maybe he will live up to his incredible potential after all.

This Summer, there has been a battle going on for the starting quarterback job with the Denver Broncos. However, just as he did last Summer, it appears Trevor Siemian is going to head into the regular season as the team’s starter. Siemian has outplayed Paxton Lynch, a former first rounder, and is starting to garner praise from new head coach, Vance Joseph.

Jordan Reed will be expected to play a big role in the Washington Redskins offense again in 2017, and he should be returning to action very soon. He was activated off the PUP list on Sunday, and appears fully healed from his toe injury. The NFC East is loaded this season, and with DeSean Jackson and Pierre Garcon gone via free agency, the Skins need a healthy Reed if they hope to compete.

Finally, in a show of solidarity, Oakland Raiders quarterback Derek Carr placed his hand on defensive end Khalil Mack’s back during the national anthem on Saturday night. Carr, who is coming off a season that ended with an injury, finished his first live action with two touchdown passes. The two have been extremely close since being drafted in the same year, and have helped revitalize the Raiders franchise.
