The Cavaliers and Boston Celtics are discussing a trade that would be centered around sending Kyrie Irving to Boston and Isaiah Thomas to Cleveland.

It’s been over a month since Kyrie Irving requested a trade from the Cleveland Cavaliers. He had a list of four teams that he wanted to go to: San Antonio Spurs, Miami Heat, Minnesota Timberwolves and the New York Knicks.

Logistically, the Cavaliers wouldn’t be able to send Irving to some of those teams. It seems as if the Cavaliers were in discussions with Phoenix and Denver earlier, but those died down due to the Cavs’ heavy demands.

Now, according to The Vertical’s Shams Charania, the Cavaliers and Celtics are engaging in trade discussions surrounding Kyrie Irving and Isaiah Thomas.

Adrian Wojnarowski has more details about the potential deal.

It should be noted that Boston has the assets that Cleveland is looking for in terms of young players like Jaylen Brown, Jayson Tatum and future draft picks. They also have a point guard, Isaiah Thomas, that’s due for a new contract at the end of the season.

Thomas hasn’t been shy about wanting a huge contract and the Celtics are unsure if they want to give it to him.

This would be a trade that makes sense for the Celtics, who could get a 25-year-old point guard about to hit his physical prime. They would pair Irving with newly-acquired free agent Gordon Hayward and Al Horford.

The Cavaliers would likely ask for Thomas, Brown or Tatum, Marcus Smart and some draft picks in return for Irving.

It’s a lot to ask for, but the Boston Celtics sure have a lot of arsenal in the tank to be able to get a player of Irving’s caliber.

If the trade were to happen it would immediately put the Celtics and Cavaliers neck and neck for first place in the Eastern Conference. Let’s stay tuned to see if Irving becomes a Celtic in the days coming.
