Joey Gallo Headed to the 7 Day Disabled List
Normally, concussions are associated with the NFL, but after a collision with reliever Matt Bush, Joey Gallo finds himself on the 7-day DL for the Rangers.
Texas Rangers players Joey Gallo and Matt Bush find themselves on the DL today, but for a moment it looked as if the Sultan of Swinging would avoid the DL until the Rangers put him through concussion protocol. Gallo can come off the DL on August 29. However, it is not clear if he will be ready to return to the Rangers at that point or not.
The Rangers, who are deep in the Wild Card playoff race, will recall Phil Gosselin, but Drew Robinson and Ryan Rua seem to be the most likely tandem to platoon in left field. Shin-Soo Choo could also shift from DH back to the outfield if the Rangers need him too.
If the concussion symptoms linger or his broken nose impedes his return past August 29, look for the Rangers to use some of their flexibility to put to replace that production in their lineup. They still have Jurickson Profar and Jared Hoying in AAA serving as an insurance plan.
Currently, the Rangers’ Three Decision King, Gallo has 35 home runs (first on the Rangers), 58 walks (second on the Rangers), and 152 strikeouts (the most on the Rangers). His power will be missed by the Rangers as well as his fantasy owners. The lone bright spot for his standard league owners would be getting his .225 batting average out of the lineup for a week.
Streaming hitters could be advantageous in this instance as you can artificially increase your batting average by replacing him momentarily by adding MLB average production. For Rangers fans, Gallo owners, and fans of big home runs, let us hope the Sultan of Swinging finds his way back onto the field as quickly as possible.
