Suspension handed out after brawl between Yankees and Tigers

Major League Baseball has officially handed out suspensions for the brawl in Detroit on Thursday.

Baseball hasn’t been front page news like this since Rougned Odor landed a right hook on Jose Bautista last season.

Nonetheless, Major League Baseball handed out suspensions in response to the brawl in Detroit on Thursday.

The most notable suspensions are Miguel Cabrera, who threw the first punch, getting seven games, and Gary Sanchez, who was seen throwing a couple cheap shots getting four games.

Alex Wilson is one of the interesting names on this list. He was the one who hit Todd Frazier, which cleared the benches for the third and final time. Joe Girardi accused Tigers manager Brad Ausmus of saying “f— you” to Brett Gardner, and Ausmus shall receive a one-game ban.

This didn’t end up as bad for the Yankees as it could have been. With only a four-game suspension for Sanchez and a two-game ban for Austin Romine, they won’t have their hands completely tied at the catcher position.

The Yankees will be shorthanded at the catcher position pending any appeals, and Triple-A catcher Kyle Higashioka is currently on the minor league DL and isn’t expected back before Sept. 1.

Sanchez has to be breathing a sigh of relief, because the initial thought was that he’d be facing a suspension like the one Cabrera received. He’s been scorching hot in the month of August, and the Yankees really can’t afford to lose his bat for an extended period of time.

Outside of the suspensions several players were also fined. Among them are Yankees manager Joe Girardi, bench coach Rob Thompson, Brett Gardner, Tommy Kahnle and Tigers shortstop Jose Iglesias. Garrett Cooper and Clint Frazier were also fined for entering the field while on the DL.

Incidents like this are a part of the game, but it’s good to see that no one was hurt. The last time there was a brawl like this was when Bryce Harper and Hunter Strickland got into it. In that brawl, Michael Morse ended up on the concussion DL, and still hasn’t returned.
