Indianapolis Colts’ cornerback Vontae Davis is expected to miss multiple weeks with a groin injury.

More bad news for the Indianapolis Colts. Head coach Chuck Pagano announced on Tuesday that starting cornerback Vontae Davis is expected to miss multiple weeks. Adam Schefter broke the news on Twitter.

Davis injured the groin in the team’s third preseason game against the Pittsburgh Steelers. The veteran and two-time Pro Bowler was slated as the Colts’ number one option at cornerback. The Colts had a porous defense last year that finished third to last in the league in total defense and bottom five in pass defense.

The team did spend some draft capital on their defensive backfield. They used the 15th-overall pick on a ballhawk of a safety, Malik Hooker. The Ohio State product is a turnover machine. Quincy Wilson, the talented corner out of Florida was selected in the second round. Both were great value picks and heralded as such by draft experts.

Indianapolis also went and got a pair of veterans in Chris Culliver and Corey White last week. Both have seen action with the team in preseason. However, neither has the makings of a number one corner.

The Colts are not off to a good start of the 2017 season. Andrew Luck, the team’s star quarterback, has yet to practice with the team. His status for Week 1 of the regular season remains in the air.

Luck and Davis may be the team’s best players on their respective side of the ball. For a team with playoff aspirations, these are tough blows.

An improved AFC South will present a tough road for the Colts. The Texans, Titans and Jaguars all made strides to improve on their previous season. The Colts will need to get healthy fast or watch their season fizzle away.
