There was some chatter last season about Kevin Durant being on the verge of supplanting LeBron James in terms of the role of the personality which drives the league’s competition at the highest level. That narrative could be reflected in the small forward ratings.

Durant comes in just a tick under James in terms of overall ratings, and the next NBA season will tell if he is going to continue to escalate that number. Just a tick below Durant is the San Antonio Spurs’ superstar, and then everyone else falls in behind Kawhi Leonard. None of the other positions feature such a drop-off between the top three players and the rest of the top 10.

Regardless of how you order Durant, James and Leonard, it’s clear that those are the top three small forwards in the game. If gamers run an offensive strategy that depends on that position contributing and facilitating, these three players are the ones to run with.
