4. Texas Longhorns

Rank: 23, Opponent: Maryland

Tom Herman has come to save the Texas Longhorns. It’s likely not going to happen overnight, but they are going to be a fun team to watch this season. Shane Buechele showed last season, despite the many struggles of the team as a whole under Charlie Strong, that he has the chops to be a top-notch quarterback at the collegiate level. What’s more, he has a strong offensive line and now a dangerous offensive coach at the helm.

The issue, however, for the Longhorns last season was their defense. Yes, they have some high-end talent like linebacker Malik Jefferson, but overall they were a sieve in the Big 12 that got into shootouts time and again. That will be Herman’s big test in restoring the Texas tradition of being a winning football team. And there’s a sneaky chance that the Maryland Terrapins will put that to the test right out of the gate.

Don’t expect Maryland to be a great overall football team this season. However, they could be fun to watch. They have a ton of talent at quarterback, going two deep with players who offer different looks with their style of play. What’s more, they have a running game that can break open big plays at any point. Subsequently, there seems to be a recipe for them to make this a shootout. And if that happens, anything could transpire in terms of the final score.
