The exodus out of Arsenal looks set to continue, as Manchester City reportedly have a £60 million bid accepted for Alexis Sanchez

Having sold Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain on transfer deadline day, you might think Arsenal would want to hold on to their remaining attacking players. Yet Alexis Sanchez is on the verge of joining Manchester City.

The problem Arsenal have had this summer is that some of their best players are nearing the end of their contracts. Rather than lose them for nothing in 12 months time, the Gunners have had to accept bids. It seems sensible to accept £60 million for Sanchez. It’s a huge chunk of change for a player who turns 29 this season.

The Chilean international seemed determined to leave too. He certainly cut a dejected figure at Anfield last weekend, when Arsenal were soundly beaten 4-0 by Liverpool. Sanchez will think he has a better chance of winning more trophies with City, and as things stand, who could argue with him?

Certainly not Arsenal, and that’s a huge part of their problem right now. Alexandre Lacazette was a fine addition this summer, but the Gunners will undoubtedly miss the bustling, energetic Sanchez. There’s the small matter of him directly contributing to 114 goals in his 142 appearances for Arsenal too. That’s going to be difficult to replace.

As for City, their squad appears to be growing stronger all the time. Some big money and big name players will be spending plenty of time on the bench (or even in the stands) this season.

Not that Pep Guardiola will mind that, of course. The signing of Sanchez would provide him with yet another top quality attacking option. After a trophy-less campaign last year, the Spaniard will want to put prizes on the board this time around. Sanchez looks set to join his quest to do just that.
