For the first time in a generation, Everton have money to spend thanks to billionaire Farhad Moshiri. But money still has to be spent well, something the Toffees did all throughout this summer’s window.

They brought Wayne Rooney back to Goodison Park in one of the smartest moves made by any team. Rooney became a bit-part player during his final few years at United, but the 31-year-old still has a lot left to offer at the top level.

Rooney’s goals have already earned his boyhood club four precious league points since his return.

It’s also hard not to love the big-money moves for center-back Michael Keane and goalkeeper Jordan Pickford. Both are highly capable young internationals who could eventually form the backbone of the England squad for years to come.

Manager Ronald Koeman also added more savvy, technique and flair to midfield by shelling out on Davy Klaassen and Gylfi Sigurdsson. A coach often favouring destructive types such as Idrissa Gueye and Morgan Schneiderlin, needs to ensure he makes room for his newly acquired creators.

Put all the new faces together and Everton are now deeper and more talented at the key positions. They will be little excuse for Koeman if his revamped team doesn’t break into the top four this season and put up strong challenges in all the cup competitions.
