The Western Michigan Broncos are keeping it real interesting versus the USC Trojans, as Darius Phillips takes this kickoff return to the house to tie it up.

Could the Western Michigan Broncos pull off the biggest upset of Labor Day weekend in college football? Well, Western Michigan is certainly keeping it interesting versus the No. 4 USC Trojans on Saturday evening.

After taking it 14 all into the half, the Broncos have been within one possession or tied with USC for most of the game. USC would take a 28-21 lead with under eight minutes left in the game. On the ensuing kickoff, Broncos return man Darius Phillips would find sweet pay dirt on this kickoff return to tie it up at 28.

USC would score a touchdown on its next drive to take a 35-28 lead, but Western Michigan even being in this game is a huge deal for the Broncos’ football program, as well as the Trojans.

See, Western Michigan lost its former head coach P.J. Fleck to the Minnesota Golden Gophers coaching vacancy this past winter. The Broncos also saw its three best players in Corey Davis, Taylor Moton and Zach Terrell all pursue their NFL dreams. Davis would be the No. 5 overall pick by the Tennessee Titans in the 2017 NFL Draft.

Yet, here we are with the Broncos nearly taking the Trojans the distance in their house in Week 1 of the 2017 NCAA season. Maybe Western Michigan is the next mid-major power we have to pay close attention to like the Boise State Broncos were under Chris Petersen? Could USC not be as good as we thought the Trojans would be to start the year? Both are in play for sure.

Perhaps USC did overlook Western Michigan a bit? It’s fair to say that was a bad idea, as the Broncos can play some ball. To nearly upset USC in Los Angeles is a huge deal for their program.
