Sebastian Janikowski and Raiders reportedly in a contract standoff
With less than a week remaining before the NFL regular season gets going, the Raiders and Sebastian Janikowski are having some contract issues.
The Oakland Raiders have a lot on their plate heading into the 2017 regular season as they look to live up to the success they had in the AFC last season before Derek Carr’s injury, but it looks like it may take some work to get a big piece of their special teams game back on the field.
With just six days to go until the Raiders start their year against the Tennessee Titans on the road, it looks like Sebastian Janikowski may not be the one making kicks for the team during the game.
According to Adam Schefter, the team is reportedly at an “impasse” over Janikowski’s contract, with the Raiders kicker rejecting a reworked contract heading into the new year. Janikowski is set to make $4 million with his current contract in 2017, and it looks like the Raiders aren’t going to be willing to pay their special teams star the big bucks.
Janikowski has been the Raiders’ starting kicker all the way back to 2000 when the team took him in the first round of the 2000 NFL Draft to lead their kicking game. Now, it looks like the Raiders could be in the market for a replacement, depending on whether or not they can work things out with Janikowski.

Schefter reported that the standoff could end shortly, with Tuesday as a possibility for a reworked deal, but it can’t go longer than Saturday at 4 p.m. ET, which is the deadline where Janikowski’s deal becomes guaranteed.
A quick decision well before the Saturday deadline is likely going to be the Raiders’ best bet to establish who will be leading their special teams unit on Sunday to open up the year, but this impasse could signal the end of a long era in Oakland.
