7. He was engaged to Marisol Gonzalez at 19

2010 was Canelo’s year. At just 19 years old, he was four years into his professional career, was a rock star in Mexico, and had signed a contract with Golden Boy Promotions. The larger his star grew, so did his confidence. Perhaps that’s how he was able to muster the courage to pop the question to his then-girlfriend Marisol Gonzalez.

Gonzalez was an extremely hot commodity in Mexico back then. After winning a local pageant in 2002, she competed in Miss Universe the following year. She’s also a TV personality and an actor. TV Notas, who first linked the two together, stated that Canelo is usually chased by women, but he was the one who initiated. Even though Gonzalez was eight years older, she couldn’t resist his boyish charm.

According to when this Boxing Scene article was published, the two got engaged shortly after he beat Carlos Baldomir. Even though Canelo started his boxing career at an early age, he probably would’ve never expected to achieve such enormous heights before reaching his 20s.

Their time together only lasted two years, but Canelo hasn’t had any trouble getting women. His current girlfriend is Fernanda Gomez, who he was seen with extensively following his win over Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. Apart from his family, Gomez will be Canelo’s most vocal supporter come September 16.
