Remember last season when Arsenal played Sutton in the FA Cup? Probably not. But if you do remember, you’ll distinctly remember a backup goalie by the name of Wayne Shaw eating a pie during the match. He has now been banned by the English FA.

Former Sutton goalkeeper Wayne Shaw has been banned by the English FA for influencing a betting market last season. There were 8-to-1 odd that a Sutton player would eat a meat pie during the match, and Shaw took it upon himself to do so.

The FA fined Shaw $490 and handed him a two-month ban from English soccer. Regardless of that, Shaw is no longer with Sutton. Shaw terminated his own contract after the pie eating incident last season.

The FA stated that the reason for handing Shaw the ban and fine was for the fact that he “intentionally influenced a football betting market.

The sketchy part of all this is that the betting company that had the 8-to-1 odds that he would eat a pie is owned by a newspaper that sponsors Sutton. It is unclear as to whether or not the newspaper/betting company is under any investigation for the incident.

Shaw played for 14 different clubs during his senior career. The only period of being a starting goalkeeper was with Eastleigh between 2003 and 2009. His most recent season with Sutton was the third time he was with the club, with the first time being between 2009-2012 and the second being in 2012-13.

Surprisingly enough, Shaw spent his youth career with now Premier League side Southampton and Championship side Reading. The 45-year-old spent most of his career playing outside of the top four divisions of the English soccer pyramid.

Shaw was also the goalkeeping coach for Sutton during his time there. It’s doubtful that the “Roly Poly Goalie” will be playing again.
