MLB Power Rankings: Dodgers skidding, but still number one
Having Matt Harvey pitch on three days rest while he attempts to resurrect his career after a devastating shoulder injury that has sapped his velocity and left him a shell of his former self is the most Mets thing of all time. Luckily, brighter heads prevailed and Harvey will not be forced to further jeopardize his career in a lost season.
It would not surprise if this is the final year Terry Collins is the manager of the Mets. He had his foibles as a skipper, but it’s hard to blame the 2017 debacle on him. Yoenis Cespedes, Noah Syndergaard, Harvey, Steven Matz, Zack Wheeler, Jeurys Familia, David Wright and Neil Walker all missed most of the year.
The arrival of Ozzie Albies at the age of 20 forced the Braves’ hand with veteran second baseman and Atlanta native Brandon Phillips. That’s now twice in the same year that Phillips has been forced out by a younger prospect. In no way is that an indictment on Phillips as a player. It would not surprise to see him play at least two or three more years in the big leagues.
Deep down, everyone knew that Matt Adams would eventually stop hitting like an All-Star and regress to the mean. Adams is batting .228/.262/.455 in the second half. First base is still Freddie Freeman’s for now until his career in Atlanta ends, but it was a very nice gesture by him to attempt to learn third base on the fly.
