Ronald Darby out 4-6 weeks with dislocated ankle

The Philadelphia Eagles got some good news today about their cornerback Ronald Darby after being carted off the field in Sunday’s game.

Ronald Darby, the Philadelphia Eagles newly-acquired cornerback, went down with a nasty ankle injury. The Eagles had played less than 20 minutes of football with Darby.

The Eagles were up 13-0 when Darby dislocated his ankle. It did not take long for the Eagles to fall behind down 14-13 against the Washington Redskins shortly afterwards. The first quarter saw the Eagles generate a ton of pressure on Washington quarterback Kirk Cousins in part due to  strong coverage.

When the injury happened, everyone assumed the worst. It looked bad. Below is a video of the injury. If you are eating, have a weak stomach or an aversion to gruesome injuries do not watch it.

While the injury looked terrible and people were already writing off the season for the young cornerback, the Eagles got some good news on Monday. According to Ian Rapoport of NFL Network, Darby should be back in 4-6 weeks.

Darby does not have any major ligament damage, and an x-ray last night ruled out any structural damage. He will need some time to heal from the pain and to strengthen the ankle through physical therapy, but there is a good chance the Eagles do not place Darby on the IR.

The news is certainly good for the Eagles. After spending the offseason loading up on wide receiver talent, the cornerback position was the thinnest on the team. Outside of trading for Darby, the Eagles have not done a lot to address the problem for this year.

The Eagles did address the position in the draft, but the cornerback they selected in the second round, Sidney Jones, will not be playing early this season after a gruesome injury of his own. The news that Darby could be back in as little as four weeks is a breath of fresh air for the Eagles.
