Big 12 power rankings, Week 3: Oklahoma tops Ohio State, Pokes stay hot
After an embarrassing loss to Maryland, Texas came back in Week 2 and dominated San Jose State. It was without quarterback Shane Buechele, too, who was out with an injury. The keys were handed to true freshman Sam Ehlinger, who came through with 222 passing yards and 48 on the ground.
Outside of Ehlinger, running back Chris Warren stepped up with one of the best games of his college career. He had 166 yards and two touchdowns, while Kyle Porter had 72 and Toneil Carter dashed for 56. It came through when an inexperienced quarterback was at the helm and led to a convincing win.
Week 3 won’t get easier for the Longhorns, however, as they play No. 4 USC on the road. It will be one of their biggest tests of the college football season and will go a long way toward momentum for the Big 12 conference games.
West Virginia was dealt a tough loss in Week 1 but fired back with a strong performance against Eastern Carolina, 56-20. This came via Will Grier’s 352 passing yards — 153 of which went to David Sills V — and five touchdowns. The team also rushed for 211 yards and three touchdowns, so it was an easy weekend of football.
Week 3 might be easier for the Mountaineers, as they host Delaware State on Saturday. The Hornets are 0-2 and scored a combined 18 points in their two games. Don’t expect this one to be close, and for Grier to further pad his stats.
