Sevilla took an early lead in their Champions League matchup against Liverpool after an error by Dejan Lovren.

Liverpool defender Dejan Lovren has been the target of fans and the media for his disappointing play since arriving at Anfield a few seasons ago. Lovren gave upset fans more ammo after his error in the opening minutes of Liverpool’s Champions League game led to a Sevilla goal.

Liverpool failed to clear the ball, with the defender heading it straight back to a Sevilla just outside of the box. Sevilla played it between each three players as five Liverpool players watched and made little effort to apply pressure. The ball was eventually played down to Sergio Escudero who made a run down the edge of the box.

With his first touch, Escudero whipped a low cross into the box. The ball went right at Lovren, who attempted to clear the ball. Unfortunately, for the Reds and Lovren, the ball went right past him. Sevilla’s Wissam Ben Yedder was waiting in front of the goal and scored with his first touch. The goal will likely be one of the easiest that  Ben Yedder will score in his career. Loris Karius made a diving attempt at the ball but had no chance of saving it.

The cameras cut to Jurgen Klopp on the sideline, who had a puzzled look on his face, unable to believe what he just saw. Klopp immediately sat on the bench and began talking to his assistant. Given how poor Lovren has been for most of the season, Klopp might be considering taking him out of the lineup.

The goal deflated the fans at Anfield, who were watching their first Champions League match, since the 2014-15 edition of the competition. Liverpool was able to even the game later in the half with a goal from Roberto Firmino in the 21st minute.
