Does a free DNA test make the Ravens-Browns game more or less appealing?

The Baltimore Ravens are giving away DNA test kits to fans and no one knows why.

According to the Baltimore Sun, the Ravens will be giving DNA test kits to every fan who enters M&T Bank Stadium on Sunday.

This must be one of the weirdest promotions in the NFL’s history. Because, obviously, everyone is wondering why the Ravens want the DNA of their fans. Don’t worry, it only gets weirder.

The kits will don the logo of the company responsible and the Ravens. Additionally, there is a DNA strand with the message: “Purple and Black are in your genes — now find out what else is.” This must be one of the most haunting statements ever written.

To be specific, the test looks at a set of four genes. Per the Baltimore Sun, one of these is the ACTN3 gene, which tests if a person “is likely to have enhanced performance in power and sprint activities or is considered normal.”

So, this test could be seen as a recruiting tool. Whoever tests well could have an overlooked strength and could have a chance in the NFL with the Baltimore Ravens.

Additionally, the test will look to find if you are more likely to have difficulty metabolizing Vitamin D well. Why the Ravens want to test for this is a question for the ages.

Still, it would be surprising if fans left the stadium thinking about wanting to find who they really are. They’ll more likely be thinking about how to celebrate a win over the Cleveland Browns.

In all seriousness, this just seems like the Ravens being used for a company trying to increase consumer data. Because there is no way that the Baltimore PR team that put together this publicity stunt thinks that this will be enough for fans to want to come watch the Browns play.
