New York Giants receiver Odell Beckham Jr. says his ankle injury was supposed to sideline him for 6-8 weeks.

Word out of Giants camp on Thursday has it that Odell Beckham Jr.’s injury is supposed to sideline him for 6-8 weeks. However, that doesn’t seem to be the case anymore. Beckham returned to practice for the first time in a month on Thursday and is day-to-day for Monday night’s game against the Lions.

At this point, Beckham is still limited in practice. He suffered a high ankle sprain in a preseason game against the Browns. Although Beckham missed the Giants’ Week 1 game versus the Cowboys, there is a growing optimism that he will play on Monday. The Giants suffered a 19-3 drubbing at the hands of their NFC East opponents last week in Beckham’s absence, however.

Beckham’s explosive ability was missing from the sub-par offense against the Cowboys. Eli Manning averaged a mere 5.4 yards per reception. Additionally, the offense failed to find the end zone against an average Dallas defense. Now, questions are being asked as Beckham seems to be rushing to return.

Beckham has struggled with injuries throughout his young NFL career. He has only played in all 16 games once. Rushing Beckham back from injury before his ankle can heal may cost the Giants in the long run. After all, it was just four days ago when he couldn’t break off the line without grimacing.

Ultimately, Beckham’s health should come first. A high ankle sprain can cause severe discomfort and slow receivers if not fully recovered. Not to mention, they can return even worse if not given proper time to rest. If Ben McAdoo is really the offensive genius he is hailed to be, he can make due without his Pro-Bowl receiver for at least one more week. But in the end, only Beckham knows if he is truly fully healthy or not.
