College Football AP Top 25, Week 4: Winners and losers
Loser: Tennessee Volunteers (No. 23 to unranked)
The “fire Butch Jones” chants are out in full force down in Knoxville after yet another baffling defeat by the Tennessee Volunteers. They were 2-0 to begin the season with a nice comeback win over Georgia Tech and a blowout of Indiana State, but the Volunteers couldn’t keep the train rolling in Gainesville.
Florida’s defense was far tougher than Tennessee had hoped it would be, holding the Volunteers out of the end zone until a wild fourth quarter. In fact, the score was 6-3 in favor of Florida heading into the final frame. Both teams would combine for 37 points in the fourth — crazy, I know — and the game ended in a 26-20 triumph for the Gators.
Tennessee’s bid to jump into the top 20 was foiled by a last-second Hail Mary from Feleipe Franks to Tyrie Cleveland. How the Volunteers let a receiver get behind them 63 yards down the field is beyond me, but it happened.
No, Tennessee’s season isn’t officially over, but voters will be hesitant to put them back into the AP Top 25 any time soon after that ugly showing. And despite Quinten Dormady’s three-interception performance, Jones said he’s sticking with his starting quarterback. Reason for concern? I’d say so.
