Kansas head coach Bill Self is unsure of his coaching future after 60.

The Kansas Jayhawks will most certainly be a top-five ranked team in the country as we inch closer and closer to college basketball returning. It won’t be a shock to the Jayhawk faithful, but what will be is what Bill Self said about his coaching future.

Self is unsure if he will coach past the age of 60, as his contract expires when he’s 59.

“I’d be happy with whatever. But I don’t want to [coach too late].” Self said to ESPN.

He’s 54 years old, and his contract pays him $4.9 million per year throughout the remainder of his deal. Self said he doesn’t want to match his peers who coached into and past their 60s. Guys like Jim Boeheim, Roy Williams and Mike Krzyzewski are all 67 or older, and Self isn’t interested in trying to replicate their longevity.

Kansas fans will undoubtedly be sad to see him go. Last season the Jayhawks matched UCLA’s record with 13 straight conference titles, and not to jinx it, but there’s little doubt they’ll make it 14 this season.

The Jayhawks have made the NCAA tournament in every season Self has coached there including a National Championship back in 2008. Self personally hasn’t missed a tournament since the 1997-98 season when he was the head coach of Tulsa.

His only double digit loss season at Kansas back was in the 2013-14 season, and that team was supposed to lose a lot more than the 10 games they lost that season.

In his Hall of Fame career Self has done some magical things at Kansas, but the obvious elephant in the room is his performances in the NCAA Tournament.

The 2005 and 2006 tournaments included first round exits to Bucknell and Bradley. Let’s not forget the second round exit to Northern Iowa in 2010. Then in 2014 and 2015 they were bounced in the second round by Stanford and Wichita State, respectively.

The last two seasons Kansas haven’t made it out of the Elite 8. Losing to Villanova in 2016 and Oregon this past season. Self has already been inducted in the Hall of Fame, but in order to be considered one of the greatest of all time (if he isn’t already) another title or two wouldn’t hurt.
