ESPN College GameDay wasn’t on site for any game, but Lee Corso still closed the show in a unique fashion.

For the Saturday, Sep. 23 edition of College GameDay, the crew went to Time Square in New York City. It was the first time they did this, as it wasn’t on a college campus. Colleges were represented from all New York and the country, as shown with bars that were school-specific. There was no game affiliation, so College GameDay analyst Lee Corso didn’t make a headgear pick.

However, Corso still did something. He left the set with about 10 minutes to go, just as the game selections were started by Rece Davis, Kirk Herbstreit, Desmond Howard and guest Keegan-Michael Key.

When viewers next saw Corso, his face was painted green and he was dressed as the Statue of Liberty. He read a statement about college football to close the show in a bizarre fashion.

No headgear pick took away the usual ending to College GameDay, the part viewers might tune-in for. It’s been a staple of the show for two decades, so anytime this is absent, it’s noticeable.

All of GameDay felt different. Sure, ESPN attempted to make all schools feel included, by showing the team-affiliated bars. The college atmosphere was gone, though, in favor of the busy streets of New York City, with a small group of fans. There are plenty of college football fans in NYC, as GameDay proved, but the show is better when it’s on a campus and focuses on a specific game.
