5. Brian Kelly on Brandon Wimbush

Notre Dame faced a major Week 4 battle at Michigan State. The two rivals usually have intriguing matchups and Brian Kelly’s squads have gone down to the wire with Mark Dantonio’s over the years. Not on Saturday night, though.

The Fighting Irish marched into East Lansing, forced some big turnovers and came away with a 38-18 win. The Irish took a 7-0 lead early in the first quarter and then a pick-six on the ensuing Michigan State drive made it 14-0 and that was basically the game right there.

Brandon Wimbush had received criticism before the game for not being able to pass the ball, but he silenced his doubters, at least according to his coach, after a solid performance against the Spartans.

While it’s good that Kelly has confidence in his quarterback, he does need to realize that the reason Wimbush’s numbers made him look accurate because 90 percent of his throws were within 5-10 yards of the line of scrimmage.
