In addition to the Dallas Cowboys’ protest, national anthem singer Jordin Sparks had something written on her hand. What was her message?

While Week 3 of the NFL season has provided fans some exciting games, the biggest storyline heading into Sunday was the anthem protests by a number of teams. In a stunning display of social justice, an estimated 300 players either knelt, locked arms or sat down during the national anthem. A few of the anthem singers joined in, too.

The protests continued into Monday Night Football, when the Dallas Cowboys along with owner Jerry Jones knelt before the anthem, but stood up once the song started. The singer of the anthem, pop star Jordin Sparks, generated some buzz on Twitter because of what was written on her hand.

A Twitter sleuth figured out that it was a verse from Proverbs 31:8-9:

Here’s a transcribed version of the Bible verse:

"Open your mouth for the youth, for the rights of all who are destitute. Open your mouth, judge righteously, defend the rights of the poor and needy."

While it’s very subtle, the verse could be interpreted as a shot at President Trump. If there’s one thing everyone in the NFL, even the people who supported him, agreed on, it’s that his remarks were divisive. And although the protests in Week 3 were due to Trump’s comments, the reason Colin Kaepernick knelt last year was because he wanted to shine a light on racial inequality.

Sparks isn’t the only anthem singer that joined in on the protests. During the Atlanta Falcons-Detroit Lions game, Rico Lavelle went on one knee before singing the final line. And before the Seattle Seahawks-Tennessee Titans game, the singer knelt before an empty sideline.

It’s unclear whether teams will continue to protest next week. But if they wanted to send a message this week, consider it heard.
