Raiders at Redskins: Highlights, score and recap

On Sunday night at FedExField, the Washington Redskins rolled the Oakland Raiders. What did we learn from this surprising Week 3 result?

With wins over the Tennessee Titans and New York Jets, the Oakland Raiders were 2-0 for the first time since 2002. That was the season they reached Super Bowl XXXVII, falling to the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

So much for a 3-0 start. Jack Del Rio’s defense was off the mark against the Washington Redskins and fell at old D.C., 27-10. Oakland’s offense was basically a no-show, but credit Greg Manusky’s defensive unit.

Three Stars

1. Kirk Cousins

The much-discussed quarterback was sharp against the Silver and Black. He connected on 25 of his 30 passes for 365 yards and three scores. Cousins spread the ball around when it came to his touchdowns, connecting with running back Chris Thompson, tight end Vernon Davis and second-year wideout Josh Doctson. Washington’s offense rolled up an impressive 472 yards.

2. Chris Thompson

In last week’s win over the Rams, Thompson ran for a pair of scores. On Sunday night against the Raiders, there were eight carries for 38 yards. More importantly, he hauled in six passes for 150 yards and another touchdown.

3. Ryan Kerrigan

Both he and outside linebacker Preston Smith had big nights as the Raiders’ offense gained only 128 yards in the game. The reliable Kerrigan finished with four tackles and a sack and helped set the tone for Washington’s win.

Odds

The Silver and Black were a 2-point favorite to knock off the Redskins at FedExField. Meanwhile, that over/under of 54 points was a tall order for any contest. But given the quarterbacks and defense of the Raiders and Redskins, it was understandable given the circumstances.

Next Week

The Oakland Raiders head back west but will make a pit stop in the Mile High City as they renew acquaintances with the Denver Broncos. Meanwhile, the Washington Redskins get an extra day to prepare to visit one of the toughest venues in the league as they clash with the Kansas City Chiefs at Arrowhead Stadium.
