Roma travel to the shores of the Caspian Sea as they face Qarabag in Baku, the capital of Azerbaijan. This is their first meeting against a team from Azerbaijan.

After being held 0-0 at home by Atletico Madrid in their first game of the group stage, the Italians need to earn at least a point to preserve any chance of advancing through to the Champions League knockout stage. Roma have won four out of their first five Serie A games, but the real tests for Roma in their post-Totti era will come in the Champions League. They have gone winless in their last nine Champions League away games and may not get a better chance than this to break the streak until next season.

This is Qarabag’s first ever appearance in the world’s most prestigious club competition, after the Azerbaijani champions knocked off FC Copenhagen in the play-off stage. Their debut was an inauspicious one, to say the least, as they were trashed 6-0 by Chelsea at Stamford Bridge. Qarabag will look to this game as their main opportunity in this group to get all three points and perhaps challenge for the third spot, which qualifies them to the Europa League in the spring.

Qarabag’s home field advantage should be offset by Roma’s edge in on-field talent. There is no clear favorite and a draw seems the most likely result.
