Hawks guard Dennis Schroder might be tanking the season before it even begins in Atlanta.

The season has yet to start and a key member of the Atlanta Hawks is already in trouble. According to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski, Hawks guard Dennis Schroder was arrested early Thursday morning on a misdemeanor battery charge.

The incident occurred Atlanta suburb of Brookhaven, Ga. Schroder has been released from custody on bail. The Hawks organization released a statement on the incident (via ESPN)

“We are aware of an incident involving Dennis Schroder earlier this morning. We are still gathering information as it pertains to the situation, and out of respect for the legal process, we will have no further comment at this time.”

This could be a huge blow for the already hurting Hawks. Schroder became the face of their franchise in the offseason following the departures of Paul Millsap and Dwight Howard.

Schroder signed a four-year, $70 million extension with the team prior to last season and assumed the role of starting point guard. He averaged 17.9 points and 6.3 rebounds in 79 games, leading the Hawks to the No. 5 seed in the Eastern Conference.

He upped his game in the playoffs, averaging 24.7 points and 7.7 assists in a six game series loss to the Washington Wizards.

The Hawks have been on a slow decline since the 2015-16 season when they won 60 games and made the Eastern Conference Finals. Jeff Teague, Millsap, Kyle Korver, DeMarre Carroll, and Al Horford have all found new homes over the past two years, leaving Schroder and fellow guard Kent Bazemore as the only two contributors from the Conference Finals squad.

If Schroder misses any time, second-year point guard Malcolm Delaney will likely move into the starting role.
