Drew Brees says Saints will kneel before anthem

Drew Brees laid out his team’s National Anthem plans on Twitter before Sunday’s game.

Drew Brees is leaving nothing to speculation. The Saints quarterback tweeted on Friday morning that he and his teammates plan to ‘kneel in solidarity’ prior to the National Anthem. However, the Saints will remain standing during the anthem. New Orleans faces Miami on Sunday morning in London.

Although most of the information about the protest was shared, it is still unclear as to whether the Saints are going to lock arms or not. Around the NFL last week, teams locked arms in unity during the anthem as a form of protest. While a majority of players around the league remained standing, an increased number sat during the presentation of the colors, including 10 New Orleans players. However, no Saints players will sit on Sunday as the whole team will stand in unity, according to Brees.

Brees, along with owner Tom Benson, has continuously preached the importance of standing together. The widespread message across the NFL has been about unity in wake of Donald Trump’s recent comments about the NFL, its owners and its players. Following the Saints’ win over Carolina last week, Brees condemned Trump for his comments and once again, stressed the importance of standing together.

Recent comments from teams have suggested that players are straying away from individual protests. Rather, franchises are unifying prior to kickoff. On Thursday night, the Packers and Bears stood and locked arms throughout the duration of the ‘Star Spangled Banner’. While it is unclear what the Dolphins plan to do during the anthem, fans could see another pre-kick display that mirror’s Thursday night’s, on Sunday morning. The Saints and Dolphins are set to kickoff at 9 a.m. ET on Sunday morning from Wembley Stadium in London.
