Marshall enters play at 2-1 on the year. The Thundering Herd have beaten the Miami RedHawks and the Kent State Golden Flashes out of the MAC so far. They have also lost on the road to the North Carolina State Wolfpack of the ACC in Raleigh. This will be the last game Marshall plays before beginning Conference USA play.

Cincinnati enters play at 2-2 (0-1) on the year. The Bearcats have wins over the Austin Peay Governors and Miami (Ohio).
