Tennessee fumbled the ball on Saturday because the Volunteers center snapped the ball off his butt. Yes, we had an SEC Buttfumble in Knoxville, folks.

It’s actually pretty simple in theory. If the Tennessee Volunteers really want to get their season going in the right direction and get the critics off their back by upsetting the Georgia Bulldogs, they’re going to have to limit their mistakes on Saturday. Basically, they’re gonna have to stay out of their own way; don’t shoot themselves in the foot because that would be wildly counterproductive.

Yeah, well, you can consider that mission failed here in the first half against Georgia.

You see, Tennessee was actually given a gift against the Bulldogs in the form of an interception. The Volunteers had the chance to get right back into this one, but those hopes quickly went out the window. Why, you may ask? Well, they pulled off their own version of the Buttfumble, when the center shot the ball directly into his backside, nowhere near the quarterback that was in the shotgun. And yes, the ball was recovered by the Dawgs.

It’s unclear what actually happened here, whether it was the center just mishandling the snap or maybe actually thinking Quinten Dormady was under him. If it was the latter, then I have some questions, which are pretty obvious.

Either way, this play right here is a pretty solid metaphor for the way the Tennessee season has gone thus far. Sure, their record looks good on paper, but they have been far from impressive to this point in the season. And now it looks like they may suffer a loss to Georgia, putting the heat on Butch Jones and this team that much more.
