Redskins at Chiefs: Highlights, score and recap

In a classic Monday Night Football matchup, the Washington Redskins went into hostile territory, battling the Kansas City Chiefs inside Arrowhead.

To finish up Week 4 of the 2017 NFL season, the world was treated to a good one inside Arrowhead Stadium. The Washington Redskins made the trip to Kansas City to take on the Chiefs, and the game was everything we expected it to be. Both teams came out firing, there were big plays throughout, and unfortunately, some big name players left the game due to injury.

On their first drive, the Redskins went after Chiefs star cornerback Marcus Peters, as Kirk Cousins hit Terrelle Pryor Sr. for a 44-yard touchdown. A field goal would put Washington up 10-0, but the Chiefs got on the board before the half when Alex Smith hit Travis Kelce for a 17-yard score. After the break, Smith ran one in to take the lead, but the Redskins responded.

Cousins threw his second touchdown of the game to Ryan Grant, as Washington retook the lead in the middle of the third quarter. A Kansas City field goal would tie the game heading into the final frame, setting the stage for a stellar finish. Harrison Butker avenged an earlier miss by booting a 32-yard field goal to give the Chiefs a 20-17 lead with under five minutes to go.

Washington got the ball back for a late drive, and it looked like Cousins hit Josh Doctson for a game-winning touchdown. However, Doctson lost the ball when he hit the ground, and the team had to settle for a Dustin Hopkins field goal with under a minute remaining. That proved to be too much time for Alex Smith, who led the Chiefs down the field for a game-winning try for Butker.

Butker, who was signed off the Carolina Panthers practice squad on Tuesday replacing Cairo Santos, drilled the 43-yarder to win the game, sending Arrowhead Stadium into a frenzy. On the ensuing kickoff, the Chiefs recovered a fumble and scored, but this game was over with the field goal.

With the win, the Chiefs continued their unbeaten start to the season, and are now the only 4-0 team remaining in the NFL.

Three Stars

1. Travis Kelce, Kansas City Chiefs

Kelce seemed to make big play after big play on Monday night, catching a huge touchdown in the second quarter to get the team on the board. He was playing up to the crowd all night, and got his team fired up every time he made a catch. Kelce finished the game with a team-high seven receptions, racking up 111 yards and a score.

2. Kirk Cousins, Washington Redskins

The Redskins need to pay this man. Kirk Cousins plays with incredible heart, and nearly willed his team to the victory inside Arrowhead Stadium. When he wasn’t getting it done with his arm, he was sacrificing his body on runs up the middle, showing that he is the kind of quarterback you want to build your team around.

3. Harrison Butker, Kansas City Chiefs

In his NFL debut, Harrison Butker became a hero for the Kansas City Chiefs. Butker nailed three field goals in his debut, which came only six days after being signed off the Carolina Panthers practice squad. With 0:08 seconds left in the game, Butker drilled a 43-yard game-winning field goal, capping a dream first game in the NFL for the 22-year old.

Betting Odds

The Kansas City Chiefs were seven-point favorites heading into this game, which was deserving considering they were one of two teams sitting at 3-0. They covered thanks to a special teams touchdown on the last play of the game. The over/under was set at 49.0, and that number was perfect, as the score was 29-20.
