There were a handful of ranked teams who went down last Friday and Saturday, but which teams are on upset alert in college football Week 6?

Potential college football upsets seemed to be in abundance going into last week. Starting on Friday with two ranked teams against unbeaten opponents and going all the way through Saturday, the opportunity was there for some of the country’s top teams to fall. For those who are fans of chaos, the week was probably a bit of a letdown. Only two of those two potential upsets came to fruition.

The first, of course, was quite a substantial one. Sam Darnold and the USC Trojans entered the week as the No. 5 team in the country, and came into the year among the favorites to make the College Football Playoff. As they went on the road to Pullman on Friday, though, Darnold struggled against the Washington State Cougars defense. Meanwhile, the defense didn’t have enough answers for Luke Falk and the Wazzu offense. After a sack-fumble during USC’s final drive, their fate was sealed.

We then had to wait until Saturday night for the next upset, but this one was far more shocking. Even playing without Derrius Guice, the then No. 25 LSU Tigers should’ve had a cakewalk as they invited the Troy Trojans to Death Valley for homecoming. Instead, they were put into a massive hole (24-7) in the fourth quarter, and didn’t have enough time to come back. Thus, it was a demoralizing loss for the Tigers.

As primed for upsets as last week was, Week 6 of the college football season has more of the same. There are numerous chances for ranked teams to fall, as we already saw on Thursday night with Louisville getting beat by NC State. So which other teams are on upset alert in Week 6?

5. Utah Utes

Rank: 20, Opponent: Stanford Cardinal

There are numerous Pac-12 teams currently in the national conversation. After their upset of USC, Washington State is undoubtedly in the mix. What’s more, the Washington Huskies remain undefeated and could continue to prove themselves in the same manner throughout the year. Meanwhile, the Trojans are still in the mix, as is Oregon. However, it feels like no one is talking about the Utah Utes, and that might be unfair as they enter Week 6 without a loss still.

Of course, the reason that the Utes are unbeaten and rank only 20th in the country is because they’ve not played anyone. North Dakota, BYU, San Jose State and Arizona isn’t a murderer’s row, but they have taken care of business to now with sophomore quarterback Tyler Huntley looking dynamic and promising. With that said, they have their toughest test to date, by far, coming to Rice-Eccles Stadium on Saturday night as the Stanford Cardinal head into town.

Though the Cardinal sit at 3-2, they’re undeniably dangerous. Running back Bryce Love has inserted himself into the Heisman conversation as he’s rushed for over 1,000 yards in five games. What’s more, David Shaw may have found a better answer at quarterback with K.J. Costello. Their defense I suspect, but their offense can win in a shootout.

The big question for this matchup is if Utah’s defense is legit or not. They’ve been stingy to this point, but haven’t faced a team near the caliber of Stanford to this point. As such, they’ll be put to the test. And how they answer it could determine whether or not the Utes stay unbeaten or not.
