Tracy McGrady joining Orlando Magic front office

It’s been a pretty good year for Tracy McGrady.

The legendary wing was recently inducted into the NBA Hall of Fame and now he’s looking to continue his storied career in basketball, this time in the front office.

McGrady will be returning to the team that made him a household name: the Orlando Magic.

McGrady played four seasons seasons with the Magic, earning All-Star appearances every year while re-writing their record books and solidifying himself as one of the league’s most electric scorers.

Now McGrady will step into a new, unfamiliar role in a familiar place. McGrady will serve as a special assistant to CEO Alex Martins.

According to the team, McGrady will, “be available to the players and coaches on and off the court,” while assisting with marketing and community relations for the team’s G-League affiliate.

Martins said of the McGrady hire, “Tracy’s knowledge, experience and stature will be an incredible asset for our players and our organization.”

McGrady will look to be the next former player to transition into a front office role, following in the footsteps of the great Danny Ainge and Steve Kerr as well as former Cavs/Heat glue-guy James Jones — newly hired with the Phoenix Suns.

The McGrady hire is the latest in an offseason shakeup for Orlando that saw the hiring of Jeff Weltman from Toronto for the position of President of Basketball Operations, as well as general manager John Hammond, who was hired after spending a decade with the Milwaukee Bucks in the same position.

Weltman, Hammond and McGrady will look to take the Magic back to the playoffs for the first time since 2012. The team hasn’t won a series since Dwight Howard carried them to the Eastern Conference Finals in 2010.

The new job shouldn’t be much of a hurdle for McGrady. Few players in the history of the league were as adaptable or dynamic as T-Mac.
