The Arizona Cardinals made a needed trade on Tuesday, acquiring RB Adrian Peterson from the New Orleans Saints.

This is a trade that would have sent shockwaves through the NFL a few years ago but now it’s a little more than a speculative add for the Cardinals. They haven’t had any threat in the running game since David Johnson was lost for most of the season to wrist surgery. It’s possible Peterson has succumbed to the wear and tear he’s put on his body. He’s never been the picture of health and was injured through much of the 2016 season. This is a gamble for Arizona, no matter what pick they gave up.Still, the Cardinals had to take a shot to try and fix their running game. There are some clear winners and two clear losers in the aftermath of this trade.

Winner: New Orleans Saints

Quite frankly, I can’t believe the Saints were able to get anything for a 32-year-old running back who they clearly had no plans for. The Saints had given him 29 touches in four games. This signing really made no sense when it happened. The Saints had RB Mark Ingram and limited cap space to address a multitude of needs. Instead of trying to upgrade their porous defense or trying to find a sidekick for WR Michael Thomas, they went after Peterson. The Cardinals basically just gave the Saints an out for a terrible off-season decision. Even though Peterson only got a total of $7 million and $3.5 million guaranteed, the Saints were 30th in cap space before the trade. They need any space they can get and now they don’t have to pretend that Peterson is part of the gameplan any longer.
